Play Dough Teaches Kids About Electricity

Extra
Bright Creatures Kit

Tech Will Save Us has created a play-dough-based kit that teaches kids about the basic foundations of electronics. It’s the latest in a range of toys from the British start-up that use play to teach kids about technology.

Launched on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, Dough Universe enables kids to make working circuits using conductive play dough instead of wires. Three kits are available, each containing play dough and a central controller plus either LED lights, a sound component or a motor, enabling a wide variety of creations. For example, the LED kit could be used to make a play-dough dragon breathing illuminated fire, while the sound kit could create musical instruments.

Tech Will Save Us is also releasing its first app in tandem with the sets, linking up the physical and digital worlds of play. The app features interactive storytelling, games and activities to help inspire creations and facilitate learning.

Suitable for children aged four and up, the toys align with a viewpoint among modern parents that careful exposure to technology can help stimulate learning and development – see Gen Alpha: Childhood Rebooted for more insight.

The company hopes that its playful kits will help young people become “makers, not just consumers of technology”. This outlook is synonymous with our recent S/S 19 Design Direction: Build, which explores how new forms of intuitive tech are reinterpreting our previous analogue interactions.
