AiryLight: Pollution Sensitive Light

AiryLight is a lamp that interprets local air quality data, creating light projections in varying sizes and patterns to represent the information visually.

Developed by US designer Annelie Berner, the light is a simple, upward-facing LED fitting with a magnifying glass suspended above it on a series of clear threads. This glass element moves up and down, closer to or further from the light depending on the levels of air pollution detected by a connected gearbox and monitor. This movement creates projections on the ceiling that appear hazy and cover more surface area as pollution levels are high (and the glass moves further away) and become smaller, more detailed circular designs as the air quality improves. The consumer can find more detailed air quality data in the connected gearbox, which contains the controls for the magnifying glass.

AiryLight's visualization of environmental health is a playful and accessible approach to an important issue. Designers are increasingly developing products and services that allow consumers to gain better awareness of wellness factors that are intangible and difficult to comprehend.
