Unveiling New Engagement Spaces in AR
Augmented reality (AR) is offering the potential to create digital overlays on top of the physical world, unleashing a new domain for both consumers and brands to occupy.
This notion of interconnected realities is a key driver in our A/W 19/20 Design Direction Burst, which examines how AR is creating fresh opportunities for engagement and self-expression. We reveal two mobile apps delving into the frontier of AR technology.
Just a Line is an app that digitally stamps touchscreen drawings onto users’ surrounding environment using AR. The app was developed by US design firm Uncorked Studios in collaboration with Google’s Creative Lab, and came out of the company’s AR Experiments project, which showcases designs that explore the creative potential of new digital technology. British artist Shantell Martin is featured in a promotional video to illustrate how her work can be realised in physical spaces as though it was a tangible object.
Similarly, US code artist Zach Lieberman teamed up with fellow artist Molmol Kuo and South African design conference Design Indaba to release AR app Weird Type. The app redefines text as an active and artistic visual element, with users able to choose from effect modes to distort, multiply and move script in relation to their movements.
