The start of the holiday season is marked with public Christmas tree unveilings. Commissioning a designer to create a bespoke tree is in favour this year and offers a festive PR incentive. We select three designs that span the creative disciplines and break away from tradition.
- Fashion designer J.W.Anderson was invited to decorate the Christmas tree in Hoi Polloi – the wood-panelled restaurant of London’s Ace Hotel, in which he has opened a retail space. Titled Body Parts, Anderson has hung the tree's branches with black and white images of antique statues and gold logo chains. Decorations featuring images of Roman busts are accessorised with the label’s signature earring.
- Architect Andre Fu, who designed the Upper House Hotel in Hong Kong, was invited to create the luxury hotel’s Christmas tree. The abstract interpretation consists of 80 layers of pine planks fanning out from the trunk, hand-stained in gradients shifting from green to orange. The sculpture is placed on a revolving platform to accentuate its spiral form.
- Product designer Marc Newson and Apple’s chief design officer Jony Ive have transformed the lobby of London’s glamourous Claridge’s hotel into an atmospheric forest. Setting out to create an immersive experience that plays with the relationships between nature and tech, tradition and future, 3D and 2D, they combined photographs of snowy birch trees on 4m-high lightboxes with sculptures and projections of trees, as well as a real pine canopy.
