The renowned iF Design Awards are regarded as the stamp of excellence within design. Here, we highlight three winners from the international competition’s Packaging Category, which caught our eye with their streamlined and minimalist approach to consumer electronics packaging.
- Master Tool Set: Korean brand LG’s V20 smartphone packaging folds open horizontally to reveal accessories such as an extra battery and charger. When laid open flat, the package resembles a tool case in which each item has its own designated pocket. Constructed from an environmentally friendly white paper, the packaging features simple icons and branding. LG is aiming to reduce weight and material consumption within all of its product packaging.
- Curio Cabinet: Chinese manufacturer Smartisan’s packaging for its M1 smartphone takes inspiration from a Chinese curio box, traditionally used for organising collectibles. The box is divided into three compartments that each opens separately, akin to an advent calendar. The box is executed in black, high-grade paper with a silken texture, while black, foiled icons on the windows indicate which accessories sit inside.
- Integrated Functionality: The packaging for Chinese company Huawei’s Honor V8 smartphone offers extra functionality by doubling up as a virtual reality headset. Upon removing the lid, the shape of the headset is revealed, which can be constructed by adding a few extra folds and inserting the included lenses. The packaging is made of FSC-certified paper, which contributes to sustainable forest development.
