British plant-based skincare brand Ren has launched an interactive pollution map that allows users to discover air pollution levels in global cities via a simple index ranging from ‘fresh’ to ‘excessive’.
The map, created in collaboration with Paris-based start-up Plume Labs, also pinpoints users of Ren’s Flash Defence Anti-Pollution Mist by encouraging consumers to share photos of themselves using the mist and tagging them with #flashdefence. Launched earlier this year, the fine mist formula helps skin detoxify, as well as protecting skin from free radicals and environmental pollution, which can lead to premature ageing, inflammation and cellular damage.
A clinical research study conducted by US skincare brand Olay found that individuals living in polluted city districts had significantly worse skin hydration than those living in the cleaner suburbs, despite making better skincare and health choices (Procter & Gamble, 2014).
Increasing consumer awareness of the dangers of fine particulate matter in city air – known as PM 2.5 – means this map is the latest in a line of anti-pollution initiatives and products created by cosmetics brands.
