SyFy Channel Launches Innovation Lab

Extra
SyFy's The Expanse

American cable and satellite channel SyFy announced the launch of an innovation incubator at the start of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. SyFy Labs will serve as a testing ground for meshing SyFY TV content with new technologies, including second screen, 3D printing and virtual reality.

One of the first experiments will see the broadcaster team up with New York-based 3D-printing company Makerbot to offer 3D-printed models of popular characters from SyFy shows, such as new space series The Expanse.

SyFy has a long history of tech innovation, having teamed up with Dutch company Philips early last year to enable viewers to customise their home lighting according to what they’re watching. Using the SyFy Sync app and Philips Hue bulbs, the colour of the lighting changes in real-time in response to the action on-screen.

Broadcasters and studios from the BBC to Pixar are all experimenting with new ways to engage viewers in a multiplatform age – see our blog post BBC’s Personalised TV Project for more.
