Toyota Files Fitness Patent

Toyota has filed a patent to add fitness tracking and health goals to its vehicles’ infotainment centres.  

Published last month, the patent filing seeks approval to give Toyota cars the facilities to advise their drivers on fitness and health checks. The patent suggests that Toyota cars will enable drivers to reach health goals more efficiently, as the in-built application offers suggestions based on the driver’s health targets.

Details in the patent show the car recommending to “make 5% progress toward your health goal by parking in the South Lot and walking to your destination at 123 Main Street”.

The patent suggests the cars might incorporate haptic rendering technology, which usually takes the form of vibrations to stimulate the consumer’s senses. However, the patent specifies that the haptic capabilities are not limited to vibrations, leading experts to believe that the health system could provide a full-body experience. 

The patent also reveals that the infotainment centre could correlate health goals with location data, meaning Toyota could use location-based ads to make journey-stop recommendations for the driver. This could be integrated with consumer purchase history, so drivers could revisit previous purchasing habits en route.
