UK entrepreneur and influencer Poppy Jamie is developing an app to help Gen Z (aged nine to 23) and millennials (aged 24 to 37) cope with stress.
Launching in January 2018, the app is called Happy Not Perfect and was announced during BeautyCon London's Tech for Good panel. It will offer daily exercises, delivered in a fun and convenient format. These weave in proven principles from cognitive behavioural therapy and breathwork to help users feel calm and balanced.
Jamie has been developing the app with psychologists and neuroscientists for two years, following her own experience. "Meditation wasn't sticking, feelings of stress and anxiety were becoming overwhelming and the pressure of life seemed unmoving," she said. "In the same way we care for our bodies by exercising, our mind also needs to be looked after. Instead of waiting to hit rock bottom, what can we be doing regularly to help us have a more balanced emotional and mental wellbeing?"
Many mental health problems go untreated, revealing an area ripe for innovation. Between 2005 and 2015, there was an 18% rise in depression and a 15% increase in anxiety disorders worldwide, now affecting 322 million and 264 million people respectively (WHO, 2017). Young people's mental health in particular is an area of growing concern – with only around 30% globally having good emotional wellbeing (Varkey Foundation, 2017).
