The latest, and possibly one of the most exciting, additions to the abundance of international shopping malls in the past two years is the JK Iguatemi mall – due to open imminently in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Touted by its owners as “the most spectacular mall in Latin America”, it will be home to a plethora of luxury brands, including Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Bottega Veneta, Prada and Miu Miu – all making their first forays into the South American market.
Boasting a sleek and suitably lavish all-white modern façade, the space – designed by Miami-based architectural practice Arquetectonica – is a beacon of polished style within Sao Paulo’s multicoloured urban landscape.
Vast atriums lined with expansive windows flood the interiors with natural daylight, as well as allowing spectacular views over the city’s newly landscaped adjacent park, Parque do Povo. Greenery is another major feature. Lush foliage underscores the design both outside and inside the shopping centre – all cultivated by Brazilian landscape architect Isabel Duprat.
Like both Westfield Stratford City and Boxpark shopping malls, which opened in London in 2011, JK Iguatemi is a destination with as much emphasis on entertainment and socialising as retail, with a number of restaurants and a total of nine state-of-the art cinemas on-site.
