Smart Homes: Attitudes to Data & Security
Smart home technology is on the path to ubiquity, a March 2016 report from global software company Intel Security suggests.
The report explores global consumer attitudes towards connected homes and security, and reveals that three-quarters of respondents believe smart houses will be as common in 2025 as smartphones are today. Other highlights include:
- Data for Discounts: Over half of consumers would happily provide behavioural data in exchange for compensation. Some 70% think companies should offer coupons and discounts to customers in return for their device-usage data.
- Millennial Opportunity: Attitudes among age groups differ, with millennials (aged 22 to 35) most open to exchanging both personal and behavioural data, as collected via their smart home devices. Some 63% said they would exchange their information for money, 44% for discounts and 29% for coupons.
- Biometric Security: The majority of consumers (89%) would prefer to secure all smart home devices through a single integrated security package. Expressing anxiety towards using a password, 54% opted for fingerprints, 46% for voice recognition and 42% for eye scans, as alternative methods for safeguarding the home.
- Hack Attacks: Two-thirds of respondents said they were very concerned about their smart home data being hacked by cybercriminals. If smart homes are to reach their full potential, brands need to do more to alleviate these concerns.
