Bompas & Parr’s Roof Boat for Selfridges
Bompas & Parr – the experimental food duo who describe themselves as “jellymongers” – have just announced their next project (scheduled for later this month) which promises to live up to every inch of their outre reputation.
Bringing their brand of creativity to one of Europe's busiest shopping streets, the pair will flood the roof of London department store Selfridges to create a boating lake six storeys above Oxford Street.
The three-day event, designed to celebrate the UK arrival of Truvia calorie-free sweetener, will include an emerald green lake, surrounded by thousands of Stevia plants (which Truvia is made from), 12 rowing boats, a “crystal island”, and a waterfall. In addition to Bompas & Parr, a number of other free-wheeling creatives have also pledged to join the extraordinary party, including cocktail bar ECC, which will provide imaginative drinks, and composer Dom Jones, who promises a unique watery soundtrack.
This is the first public event to be hosted on Selfridges’ roof since chef Pierre Koffmann’s pop-up restaurant in 2009, and an event that Bompas & Parr describe as their most ambitious to date.
By shining a spotlight on a space once home to a wild variety of events – it has played host to gardens, cafes, a golf course and an all-girl gun club – the larger hope is to restore the rooftop venue to its former glory. Boat rides on the roof will be by ticket only, available from Ticketweb.
