Preview: Maison & Objet January 2017

Dedicated to interior design, the biannual international trade show Maison & Objet (M&O) returns this month in Paris. Giving centre stage to French design, the event also presents the calm home as an inspirational space.

  • French Style: M&O has partnered with French furniture design association AF (l’Ameublement Française) to promote French design as a recognisable style in the same way as Scandinavian, Italian and Japanese styles, among others.

    A study revealing the general public's inability to distinguish French design prompted an initiative to identify its 10 core values – including heritage and cultural openness, a touch of luxury and exceptional know-how. An exhibition manifesting these values is set to open in April, with a preview of selected works being showcased at M&O under the title Le French Design. 
  • Reintroducing Serenity: A longing for uncomplicated and luxurious living lies behind the show’s inspirational theme, Silence. To counteract the hectic outside world, M&O envisions the home as the Eden of serenity and sensibility. This sees objects stripped of decoration, ornamentation and complexity, bringing the minimalist aesthetic to the foreground.

    The use of materials is trimmed down along with the form, revealing only necessary classic geometric shapes. Stone and marble surfaces create a clear contrast of black and white, while polished woods bring warmth to furniture and home accessories. The subtle colour palette is created by overlaying glass for halo effects and generating varying hues with wire mesh.
