Dye It Yourself Tables

Japanese design studio Takt Project uses natural dyes to transform its Dye It Yourself tables, which are made of a porous plastic composite.
Tinted colours extracted from natural foods and minerals are easily absorbed into the white plastic, creating unique effects and colour combinations. Botanical dyes made from materials such as safflower, chestnut, cherry blossom and indigo are applied alone or blended to achieve vivid, lasting colour.
Consumers can customise the tables themselves, offering a participatory role in the production process while allowing for individualised product. See Personalising Product and 2016: Look Ahead - Product Design for more on mass-produced personalisation.
Plant-based staining provides an innovative and eco-friendly colouring solution for plastic. For more on sustainable dyeing methods and DIY projects, see Alternative Dyeing. For more furniture and textile projects driven by inventive colour application, see Milan 2015: Colour Application.
