Wuu: The Private Messaging App

Extra
Wuu app

US-based entrepreneur Paul Budnitz, founder of creative network Ello, has launched Wuu, a private messaging app free of followers, likes or ads.

Created to offer an alternative to ‘like-obsessed’ social media networks, the app is devoid of #influencers because everything is private. Currently available by invite only in the iOS store, Wuu is “a space where people share silly photos, videos and messages that vanish after 24 hours”.

The user interface is free of sub-menus and hamburger buttons and features a circle-shaped button to take and send photos, a triangle for audio and a square for text. There is no follower count – users simply send and receive a stream of Wuus: filtered photos, coloured text messages and simple audio recordings.

“Wuus are to Wuu as Snaps are to Snapchat,” writes Wired reporter David Pierce. “You can add friends by user name or email, and send Wuus to one friend or every friend. You can even request a Wuu from people in something akin to a ‘Whatcha up to?’ text. Posts fade over time, and disappear completely after one day.”

To create a Wuu, users write text or take a photo or video, and swipe to layer in colours or filters. Some text triggers surprises in your feed – for example, typing Bill Murray will trigger a playful image of the American actor.
