At this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (February 27 to March 2), Chinese technology company Huawei introduced two vivid new hues to its P10 smartphone range. The company collaborated with the Pantone Color Institute to identify two progressive, yet commercial additions to complement the existing palette.
Huawei's investment in Dazzling Blue and Pantone's colour of the year, Greenery, indicates a need in the market for more expressive finishes that cater to customers looking for more individual technology. We explore this subject further in CES 2017: Colour, Material & Finish and IFA 2016: Colour, Material & Finish.
Huawei has muted these vivid colours using fine textures that refract the light, as well as tonal trim details and a palette of complementary materials that provide tactile and visual interest. In addition to the existing super high gloss and sandblasted matt finishes, the company has developed a Hyper Diamond-cut texture. This micro-texture of criss-crossing bevels refracts light to emit a soft sheen. On a practical level, Hyper Diamond-cut surfaces also provide extra grip and are resistant to fingerprints and scratches.
