A new room-swapping app called Nightswapping allows users to trade rooms in their homes for accommodation in someone else's, without any monetary exchange.
Based in France, users must first become members of the Nightswapping site before they can host guests in their spare rooms or offer up their entire properties in order to earn 'nights'. Once the user has hosted guests, they can then stay in other members' homes for free.
Individuals who are wary of hosting a stranger but still wish to try the concept can buy nights at other members' homes before committing to the full service. Prices range from €7-49 ($8-53).
The site currently has 150,000 members in 160 countries. Tapping into consumer desire for spontaneity and adventure travel, the app also offers surprise destination and accommodation suggestions based on cities the user has previously searched.
Booking sites that use the sharing economy to provide accommodation that feels like a home-from-home or allows guests to tap into their specific interests are gaining traction with modern travellers – as explored in Hospitality's Evolved Sharing Economy.
