Chinese virtual reality (VR) development firm Dlodlo is set to launch the world’s thinnest and lightest consumer VR headset, the V1.
The new headset weighs less than an iPhone at 3.1 ounces, and its lens is just 0.68 inches thick, making it the thinnest and lightest headset currently available on the consumer market. Made from carbon fibre and skin-sensitive silicon, the sleek design is modelled after a pair of sunglasses, with a two-lens silhouette providing an alternative to the bulkiness of other headsets like the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear.
V1 operates as a standalone device. It remains lightweight due to a wireless hard drive and a separate processor (other headsets contain the processor) no bigger than a smartphone, which stores the VR content.
The V1’s screen display has a resolution of 2,400 x 1,200 (880 pixels per inch), delivering the highest-definition VR image quality available. Meanwhile, headphones integrated into the glasses’ handles provide the audio.
Dlodlo is also developing a platform where users can create profiles and interact with each other to establish a global social VR ecosystem. The content platform will include games, videos and apps for purchase.
Retailing at $559, the V1 will be available for purchase on Kickstarter later this month, while a developer edition will be released in October 2016.
