Rihanna perfectly nailed one of the season’s emerging trends with her latest Fenty showing for Puma, cleverly combining sportswear and streetwear with sweet boudoir dressing.
Only this wasn’t any old boudoir – think lingerie dressing via Marie Antoinette at the Palace of Versailles for a collection full of pretty detailing, luxe fabrications and a rococo candy-coated palette.
Standout pieces included a sheer pink ruffled anorak – a look that set the scene for unexpected mixes like the classic polo shirt, an emerging key item this season – teamed with lacy shorts, or the floral brocade boiler suit layered over a laced boned corset.
And streetwise girls will love the idea of satin cami-knicks subversively worn under an oversized khaki parka, or going clubbing in a white tee and cargo pants tethered with a wide corset belt.
There were simple commercial pieces too, like the perfect satin slip dresses, the utility cagoule refashioned in minty green taffeta and brocade, or the oversized branded shell-pink sweat, teamed with ruffled-hem cycling shorts.
Colours spanned a cosmetic box of blush and poudre pinks, through to deep espresso browns and urban khaki with pops of lavender and palest mint for multi-layered sheers, mesh, broderie, taffeta and lace.
And to complete that incongruous but surprisingly commercial mix of sports styling with delicate fabrics and sweet colour, reams of pearls, rhinestones, high laced ankle-banded ‘shoeties’ and towering kick-ass flatform trainers.
