The expansive 23,000 sq ft renovated warehouse (a former nightlife venue) has kept elements of the old architecture, in keeping with the factory buildings in the neighbourhood. Following a ‘remix’ theme, traces of old colourful graffiti have been retained on exposed brick walls. Inside, an open layout flooded with natural light encourages interactions and idea sharing. An angular skylight serves as a focal point and is enhanced with reflective panels to create a unique horizon combining views of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
In addition to housing a public central working space, where visitors can sit at a communal desk, A/D/O also boasts a gallery, café and retail space with a highly curated selection of merchandise. The facility also includes dedicated desks and state-of-the-art digital, printing and wood working tools for prototyping and testing, available to designers with a membership.
Aiming to create a strong design community, A/D/O founded a Design Academy, which will host frequent events including workshops, discussions and courses exploring the intersections and boundaries within the design sphere. Its first season, titled Utopia vs. Dystopia, will investigate the role of design in navigating a rapidly changing world.
The centre will open to the public in January 2017.
