Italian fashion house Prada showed a pastel toned Spring/Summer 2012 collection at Milan Fashion Week yesterday. Miuccuia Prada described the collection with one word: “sweetness”. But as always with Prada, it wasn’t that simple.
The feminine vision was explored through ice-cream coloured lace separates and pretty pleated dresses, but the delicacy was given an edge with muscle car motifs and rhinestone mosaic embroidered silk jackets. The result was mid-town Americana with a heavy dollop of Italian sensuality. US West-coast mid-century pool parties were also referenced through the pin-up bathing suits and printed bandeaus, teamed with appliqued leather pencil skirts.
Bucking the trend for the dropped waist, Prada's silhouette was classically feminine with pleated knee-length A-line skirts sitting on high waits, teamed with boxy, oversized jackets. In addition to girlish pastels, fiery reds were shown as well as a retro palette of moss green, mahogany and teal that hinted at Prada’s automobile inspirations. Fierce, sky-high stilettos with hot-wheels flame detailing, and clutch bags embellished with emblems of 1950s Cadillacs, reiterated the sugar-meets-spice aesthetic of the collection.
