Hero: Smart Supplement Dispenser
New York-based start-up Hero has developed a smart device for sorting and dispensing pills and supplements.
The dispenser, also called Hero, looks like a high-end coffee machine with a colourful display, and is intended to make managing and taking a course of medicine easy and safe. It can sort various pill types and issues an alert when a dose is due, before dispensing it automatically. The pills are simply poured into a container for sorting, while dosages and timings only need to be programmed once.
For peace of mind, Hero has a companion app that can keep family members or carers updated when doses are taken or missed. It alerts the user when supplies are low and can order refills from e-commerce site Amazon. There is growing demand for technologies that take the thinking out of mundane tasks and automatically respond to consumers' needs – see Predictive Tech for more.
The device is targeted at multiple demographics, but will particularly appeal to seniors. Many seniors are turning away from products aimed at their age bracket, since they are often poorly designed – as discussed in Seniors Level Up.
Hero is available to pre-order for $399, and will retail at $999. The device is expected to ship in early summer 2016. For more coverage on how technology is boosting health, see Wired Health 2015.
