Soil Accessories: Enhancing Bathroom Wellness

Extra

Japanese brand Soil harnesses the natural breathable and moisturising benefits of diatomaceous earth – or diatomite – in its series of bathroom products.

The inherent advantage of diatomite – a sedimentary soil formed from the fossilised remains of vegetable plankton – is its porous structure. Comprised of hundreds of minute holes, it has excellent water absorption and circulation properties.

The items are finished with Isurugi – a plastering technique typically used in modern construction to apply a final coat to walls and flooring. The diatomite’s natural qualities still excel: the bath mat quickly removes water from the soles of the feet, while the soap dish preserve’s the bar’s freshness by absorbing excess water. The material is also gentle on sensitive skin – offering great potential for the beauty industry – and highly recyclable.

Its natural textures also bring tactile and sensual qualities to everyday objects, while helping to create a dry bathroom space. Look to Modern Bathrooms: Holistic Spaces for more on the materials and cues facilitating wellbeing in the bathroom.

Colours are indicative of the Japanese regions from which the earth is taken: white from Akita, pink from Noto and Ishikawa, and green and black products created with earth from Akita mixed with natural green pigment and charcoal respectfully.

As spotted at this year’s Ambiente, Soil is one of many Japanese brands bringing their understated notions of luxury to the commercial fore through soft, natural and tactile forms – see our Product Trends for more.
