Stairway to Heaven

Currently exploring the 100-day Setouchi Art Festival located on a group of seven islands in the Seto Inland Sea in Japan, the Stylus team selects this renovation of a local hilltop shrine on Naoshima island by artist Hiroshi Sugimoto as a highlight.

A glass staircase connects the main structure of the Go'o shrine above ground with a underground chamber, accessed through a narrow passageway in the hillside like an ancient tomb. The slabs of crystal clear glass that form the staircase are mesmerising, both refracting and reflecting the surrounding colours.
