Boasting the next step in reading and augmented reality gaming, Japanese games console giant Sony PlayStation has unveiled its new Wonderbook platform – an augmented-reality-based e-book containing multiple stories, games and experiences.
And what better way to show off the brand’s magical augmented reality features than with a collaboration with Harry Potter author JK Rowling and her Pottermore web initiative, which launched last year to keep the Harry Potter brand alive.
As PlayStation’s first Wonderbook, The Book of Spells is based on a textbook used by characters at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter series to learn the secrets of their craft. Players are encouraged to tilt, rotate and physically interact with the book-sized device to access content and participate in games.
As augmented reality technology develops and becomes more sophisticated, coupled with a growing consumer desire for all-inclusive experiences, we expect to see more initiatives like this from gaming and entertainment industries.
