AkzoNobel Launches Recycled Paint

Extra
Dulux Trade, Evolve

In a welcome step towards circularity in the paint and coatings industry, global manufacturer AkzoNobel has launched a recycled, trade-grade emulsion derived from paint that would have otherwise been discarded. Developed by subsidiary brand Dulux Trade, Evolve is made from 35% recycled paint, gained from households across the UK.

According to the manufacturer, millions of litres of paint go to waste every year. Around 64% of this is perfectly usable, and less than 1% is currently recycled.

Dulux Trade has partnered with multinational resource management firm Veolia, which collects 2,500 tonnes of excess paint from its UK recycling centres each year, transforming the otherwise wasted paint into a commercial product. Using an innovative process of sorting, filtering and treating with biocides to remove bacteria, any surplus standard wall emulsion (which is water-based, low-VOC) can be re-engineered into Evolve.

The end result is a white, matt emulsion suitable for standard interior walls and ceilings. Quality, coverage and opacity are not affected, and compared to regular vinyl matt paint, the process produces over 10% lower carbon emissions per litre.

We expect to see more circular processes that divert waste from landfill. See Conscious Colour for more eco-friendly paint innovations and colour solutions.
