Papaya Playa's Pop-Up Hotel

Taking its cue from international retailers’ innovative pop-up shops, Mexico’s Papaya Playa beach resort has paired up with hospitality firm Design Hotels to create a temporary cultural and eco-friendly camp.

Located on Mexico’s lesser-known Tulum beach on the Mayan Riviera, the camp is made up of 99 cabanas – small huts with thatched roofs – built from local materials. These range from private oceanfront rooms with en-suite bathrooms, to affordable hostel-like communal crash pads.

Design Hotels has introduced a multicultural element by bringing in restaurants from Berlin’s Bar 25 offspring, KaterHolzig. There is also a boutique, bar, lounge, and recording studio, which will play host to international DJs and musicians.

Papaya Playa is open until May 4 2012.
