The BioLite BaseLantern is the world’s first flat-pack lantern that combines innovative lighting with Bluetooth connectivity.
The small-scale, portable lighting solution (about the size of a sandwich, according to BioLite) uses edge-emitting lighting – the same technology found in fibre optic cables – to create a durable, bright sheet of light which doubles as a miniature smart grid.
The device was created with three core energy needs in mind: to provide strong light without bulk, to offer shareable power that allows users to charge devices such as mobile phones and to deliver smart control including real-time feedback on how to make the device’s energy last longer.
Users can also calibrate the warmth and tone of the light with full-spectrum colour control, set sleep timers or alarms, or enable proximity activation via linked-up devices.
BioLite’s HomeStove, a portable fire cooker, became one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns of all time in 2013. The technology has since been distributed to over 15,000 households across India, Kenya and Uganda, providing clean cooking and charging power to those in need. Continuing the humanitarian mission, funds from BaseLantern will support research, development, and distribution of BioLite lighting to developing communities.
