Food Expiration Gadget

Food Minder

UK-based start-up Food Minder has created a kitchen gadget that informs users when their produce is nearing its sell-by date or has expired, helping to reduce food waste.

The small circular disc sticks directly onto food products or any household item with a limited shelf life, such as medicine, and alerts users via a lighting system. The disc glows red when food has reached its expiry date, yellow when it has one day left before expiration, and green when it is one day or more in date. Users must manually programme the expiry dates into the gadget in order to receive the prompts.

“Despite the controversy surrounding expiration dates for food – and whether or not they actually convey accurate timelines with regards to freshness and safety – I think this gadget could certainly help individuals to maximise the ingredients they already have at home,” says Mandy Saven, head of Food, Beverage & Hospitality at Stylus. “A step on from this would be when the gadget can then suggest recipes using a number of near-expiry items.”

Food waste is increasingly becoming an issue of worldwide concern, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, with 1.6 billion tonnes thrown out each year in the US alone. Smart brands are harnessing the power of tech to devise products and tools that assist in the reduction of food waste.
