5-in-1 Chopping Board for Small Kitchens

As discussed in The Shapeshifting Kitchen, shrinking urban dwellings are fuelling demand for multifunctional and compact kitchen tools and appliances. Speaking to this, Ohio-based start-up ChopBox has created a chopping board that performs numerous tasks and even cleans itself after use.

A section of the waterproof bamboo board acts as a digital weighing scale, enabling the user to measure prepared ingredients. Meanwhile, a secondary board slides out from underneath for further preparation space, and it also includes two integrated knife sharpeners and a kitchen timer.

The board is USB chargeable, with the battery lasting up to one month on a single charge. The design also includes a built-in disinfecting UV light that allows the board to clean itself and disinfect knives for germ-free cooking. See The Health-First Kitchen for more on clean kitchen trends.

The brand launched a KickStarter campaign for the concept in Sepetember 2019 and raised more than $1m in one week, surpassing its target of $10,000 in under 25 minutes. The product will launch to the public in December 2019 and will cost $199.

This is a great example of creative design that caters to space-limited urbanites and those living in shared accommodation. See also Post-Kitchen Lifestyles, Carry-Case Kitchen for Space-Poor Millennials and 'Sofa in a Box' Caters to Generation of Movers.
