‘Clean’ Cereal Produced Using Minimal Water


Water scarcity is a pertinent global issue for product manufacturers, including those in the food industry (see The Post-Vegan Opportunity). With this in mind, Californian snack brand Zego Foods has developed a low-water-footprint breakfast cereal made from organic black rice. Its eco-friendly status is sure to make it a winner amongst sustainability-minded consumers.

The Fairtrade rice used to produce the nutrient-dense Crisp Black Rice Cereal requires one-tenth of the water needed to produce more common rice varieties – a fact that is called out on-pack.

The cereal is also ‘purity tested’ for over 400 chemicals and allergens, and the results are printed on the packaging in an easy-to-understand ‘Purity Panel’. Colour coding ranges from green (none detected) through to red (over federal standards), and the full list and further information can also be accessed via a QR code. This kind of purity labelling may become more important as the world emerges from the Covid-19 crisis, due to heightened consumer awareness of food safety and hygiene standards. Meanwhile, as some meteorologists predict that 2020 may be the hottest year on record thanks to global warming, it’s never been more important for food brands to put sustainability at the heart of new product development, and to use as little natural resources as possible.
