Raf Simons Shows First Collection for Dior in Paris

Belgian designer Raf Simons made his much-anticipated debut for French luxury fashion house Christian Dior in Paris yesterday, with a couture collection that blended the label’s iconic 1950s style with his own signature minimalist aesthetic.

Presented to an audience that included a host of heavyweight editors and fellow designers, Simons’ well-received collection played with pieces and shapes associated with Dior’s iconic mid-century New Look style. Nipped waists, stiff peplums and balloon skirts all featured, as did the classic Dior ‘bar’ jacket, here paired with modern cigarette pants.

By emphasising the boldness of the silhouette and favouring the clean lines for which he became known in his previous role at Milan-based label Jil Sander, Simons struck a careful balance between heritage and contemporary innovation.
