NYFW A/W 12-13: Caged In
New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012-13 was in full flow over the weekend, with many of the city's biggest designers showcasing their latest collections.
British celebrity designer Victoria Beckham received positive press for her latest collection, which stayed true to her signature body-conscious aesthetic. For A/W 12-13, Beckham was ultimately concerned with the waist, using double-strand leather belts to give a military feel to flirtatious, A-line dresses. Other pieces such as body-con T-shirt dresses that fell to the mid-calf were given a utilitarian edge with printed black horizontal stripes that worked to a create a corsetry effect, marrying sexiness with straight-jacket severity.
Similarly, American designer Tess Giberson layered nude leather harnesses over simple white shirts, silk separates and mesh vests for a luxe take on Stylus’ Sidestep industry trend for the season. While Giberson’s collection was predominantly interested in drapery and layers, the horizontal leather strapping provided structure and attitude. US label DKNY showed wide corset belts to cinch in fur and leather outerwear in matching colours, while French brand Herve Leger by Max Azria teamed wide leather body harnesses with knee-high gladiator sandals for a sexy Roman warrior aesthetic.
New York Fashion Week runs from February 9-16 2012.
