Digital Artists Recreate Glastonbury’s Shangri-La in VR
With Glastonbury Festival cancelled due to coronavirus, avid fans had the option to tune into a free two-day virtual reality (VR) event (July 3-4) which recreated its iconic Shangri-La arena in 3D digital form. The Lost Horizon festival featured four virtual stages, 200+ artworks curated by the ShangrilArt group, and more than 50 performing acts.
The Shangri-La team partnered with VR streaming platforms Sansar (US) and VRJAM (UK) to create the event, which was accessible via desktop, VR or mobile app. VR and PC users were able to create customisable virtual avatars, roam the spaces, and interact with other festivalgoers.
Art and design played a big role in the Lost Horizon experience. The exact layout and dimensions of the Shangri La site were mapped out in a videogame-like 3D landscape, including its innovative 360° video installation that encompasses the Gas Tower arena.
Numerous VJs (video jockeys) and visual artists, including London-based visual production company Rebel Overlay, produced original 360° content for the screens. The pulsating visuals worked in tandem with the music to bring a dynamic, immersive element to hologram performances from DJs such as Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim and Peggy Gou.
