Digital Fashion MA Courses Gain Popularity


As we tracked in New Rules, New Roles, a rapidly changing fashion landscape is leading to the emergence of a variety of new jobs that need specialised training. As part of that shift, UK-based digital fashion design courses are gaining momentum as more brands and designers seek to embrace this new opportunity.

Although digital clothing has been slowly gaining traction over the last few years, pandemic restrictions and increasing sustainability concerns have accelerated its popularity. As fashion weeks globally went virtual, seemingly perfect opportunities to embrace digital design practices or virtual showrooms fell short, in part due to a lack of education and training available for fashion professionals.

To meet this shortcoming, the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, UK now offers a one-year Digital Fashion master’s programme, set to launch this September. Highlighting both the lucrative nature of digital one-offs as well as the sustainable practicality of virtual try-ons and 3D samples, the course aims to equip a new generation of designers with the necessary skills to embrace fashion’s digital opportunities.

A similar Digital Fashion MA is on offer at Leeds Arts University, prioritising functional training in 3D sampling software, wearable tech production and laser-cutting innovations, while Arts University Bournemouth now runs an MA programme in Digital Fashion Innovation.

The opportunities surrounding digital fashion go beyond the novelty of in-game skins and avatar-only collections, and as a number of brands including Tommy Hilfiger begin to use digital sampling, virtual collections and presentations could become even more effective and prevalent with a specially trained workforce.
