Unmonday 4.3L speaker

Launched this month on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter, the Unmonday 4.3L is an independent Airplay speaker produced by Finnish company Unmonday Ltd. The portable speaker uses Apple Airplay technology to wirelessly stream sound from a laptop, tablet or phone, with a battery life of up to 10 hours.

In an unconventional move, the speaker’s enclosure is made from porcelain, adding a sense of quality and durability to the device. The casing is also easily removable to show the inner workings and allow repair when necessary. For added luxury, Unmonday has collaborated with New York-based leather goods specialist Lumi, which is creating custom leather carry cases for the speakers.

The speakers can be used singularly for mono sound, as part of a pair for stereo sound, or as a group of five to create Dolby surround sound. This can be done by simply placing the speaker on a different face of its innovative hexagonal shape depending on the position it takes in the room. A motion sensor inside the speaker, similar to that used on a tablet or phone screen, detects the angle of the speaker and plays the correct sound accordingly.
