International suncare brand Dr. Skin has launched the Sun Drink – a beverage that promises suncare protection as part of a holistic approach to beauty. The product is confirmation of the ingestible suncream trend we explored in Next-Gen Functional Food.
The Sun Drink is formulated with lycopene – a phytochemical found in tomatoes and red fruits which tastes like orange juice and supplies skin layers with the vital ingredients needed to protect them from sun damage. It offers increased protection against UVA-induced free radicals, which a topical sunscreen on its own can’t offer.
The accompanying lotion acts as a traditional suncare lotion, blocking out UVA and UVB rays, which contribute to ageing, pigmentation and sunburn. It also provides moisture and relief through vitamin E and aloe vera.
The draw here is the focus on holistic beauty, as consumers are increasingly seeking to take care of their bodies both inside and out as a key foundation of their daily beauty rituals. According to international consultancy Accenture, the global consumer healthcare market will grow by almost 50% to $737bn over the next five years. This new attitude will increasingly shift focus onto superfoods and supplements like lycopene and beta-carotene that deliver beauty-boosting vitamins, antioxidants and actives.
