Easy Commute: Singapore’s Driverless Cars

Driverless vehicles will be on Singapore's roads by the end of 2016

Singapore's public transport operator Smrt Services has partnered with Dutch sustainable mobility firm 2getthere to develop driverless vehicles.

In anticipation of the growing demand for automated cars, Smrt and 2getthere have formed a new joint venture called 2getthere Asia. "There is a growing national push to implement future mobility solutions that can meet our first and last-mile connectivity needs in Singapore," said Colin Lim, managing director at Smrt Services. "The vehicles will complement our existing multi-modal transport operations to bring about seamless connectivity for commuters."

The group rapid transit (GRT) cars are capable of carrying up to 24 passengers each and cater for around 8,000 passengers per hour in any single direction. They have been earmarked for use in airports, campuses, and residential, resort and industrial park networks, and will be on Singapore's roads by the end of 2016.

The vehicles are able to operate autonomously in demanding weather conditions, using artificial landmarks for navigation, and travel at a speed of 40km/hr. As they do not require drivers and can be ordered on-demand, they are deemed safer and more efficient. An obstacle-detection system is employed for the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other road users, while air conditioning and wide, automated doors help to ensure comfort and accessibility.
