Established & Sons Adapt Furniture for Covid-19
The pandemic is driving the need for flexible products that can adapt to the home’s shifting roles. British brand Established & Sons is responding by extending its Grid system into a product family, allowing users to alter the design as their requirements change – now and beyond the pandemic.
The Grid, designed for the brand by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, is comprised of an open-ended structural base and reconfigurable units that is part sofa, part lounge and part presentation space.
“Grid lands somewhere between furniture and architecture,” says Erwan Bouroullec. “The architectural purpose of Grid is to naturally create segmentation and to be continuously evolving… As we have seen in the current situation, we need to be able to adapt.”
Grid is being extended with a line of accessories, including cupboards, shelving and desk surfaces that cater to a wide range of residential and commercial settings.
“The impact of the coronavirus has only accelerated the blurring between domestic and working spaces and has prompted a rethink of hospitality and office environments,” says the brand. “The Grid System offers a solution to adapt and respond, providing a foundation for the redesign of almost any space.”
As we describe in The Future Office: How & Where We’ll Work, commercial offices must become adaptive and embrace reconfigurable designs to accommodate meetings, learning and social activities.
“Many people have been frustrated with the lack of a suitable workspace at home. And many office-based businesses are re-evaluating the purpose of the office environment, downsizing and shifting focus to the social and communal aspect of work,” says Established & Sons design director Sebastian Wong.
The expansion coincides with the launch of a digital customisation tool that allows architects, designers and consumers to scroll through the product range and find the configuration and accessories that work with their space and needs.
