Matchmaking App Promotes Good Habits

Partners In Grind matches people with similar goals to motivate each other

California-based start-up Partners In Grind has launched an app that helps users develop positive habits by matching them with a like-minded person, so they can motivate each other to change.

Launched in December 2015, the self-improvement tool is based on the idea that social accountability is crucial for habit formation. Once a user has made a profile and outlined the lifestyle behaviours they'd like to begin or improve, the matchmaking service finds someone else with a common goal and puts the pair in touch.

Users can encourage each other however they like. Once an activity is completed, the other person is "tagged" to indicate that it's their turn to take action. As part of the service, users also receive weekly newsletters and videos with motivational advice and tips.

Co-founder Ari Bana designed the app after discovering how useful it was to have a partner when trying to form new habits. "I tried this myself with a stranger I met through Reddit for waking up early. It was ridiculously effective – I've been going strong in the 5am club for a few years now," Bana said in an online forum on website Product Hunt.

The app will appeal to millennials (those aged 22 to 35), in particular, who are enthused by fitness activities where they can share experiences with others and are motivated by common goals – see Millennial Fitness: Party People for more.
