FKA Twigs’ Instagram Magazine Celebrates Braids

FKA twigs AVANTgarden

British musician FKA Twigs has launched an innovative new Instagram magazine called AvantGarden, with the first edition dedicated to braided hairstyles.

Using Instagram’s slideshow feature, issue number one – Roots Shock Beauty –celebrates braids and their heritage, with a series of 10 flick-through visuals evoking traditional barbershop imagery. Shot at her London home, she enlisted the help of long-time UK collaborators creative artist Suzannah Pettigrew, fashion stylist Matthew Josephs, hairstylist Rio Sreedharan and make-up artist Bea Sweet. Designers Matt de Jong and Roxie Warder worked on the slogans and illustrations.

To accompany the launch, FKA Twigs asked her Twitter followers: “How do braids make you feel?”, with many responses themed around a connection with culture and history, beauty activism and the power of choice. See Empowering Beauty and Inclusive Beauty: 5 Key Lessons for more.

Described as “part magic, part memoir”, AvantGarden will document FKA Twigs’ personal experiences in music, art, fashion and beyond, with monthly themed editions. “As far as I’m aware, no-one’s done a monthly magazine with a beautiful layout and thought of it that way on Instagram,” she told UK magazine Dazed. “I think it’s also a way for me to create on a low budget again. I’ve come from a very punk way of working. All my early music videos were just my friends setting up in my living room.”
