Stone Sunglasses by Shwood

Known for its cool wooden eyewear, Portland-based brand Shwood has now added stone to its roster of materials, creating lightweight sunglasses made from handcrafted slate. Fusing slate with birch wood, the new Stone collection includes two of the brand’s classic styles, Canby and Belmont.

Shwood worked with German engineers to create the extra-fine slices of slate, measuring in at just 1 mm thick, for the collection. This innovative use of stone is demonstrative of the brand’s dedication to exploring and utilising natural materials for a contemporary end product. The glasses are durable and finely crafted while still maintaining the natural, raw aesthetic that the brand has become known for. See Ultra-Refined in Stylus' Material Focus A/W 2014-15 for more examples of fine-honing natural and composite materials for sophisticated finishes.

As part of the launch of the Stone collection, Shwood has created a video illustrating the combination of fine detail and hardy material involved in the making of the glasses. Watch it here.

The Shwood Stone collection is limited to 200 pairs, each retailing at $60.
