NRF 2018: Smart Sizing Technology

Extra
Fit3D Body Scanner

Companies at NRF 2018: Retail’s Big Show in New York (January 14-16) offered tools that leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) and facial-recognition technology to simplify sizing for customers and boost online and in-store sales.

  • Predictive Sizing: Amazon-owned BodyLabs creates true-to-life 3D body models. Its SOMA Shape API predicts and measures a customer’s body shape from a single image. Although Amazon has yet to reveal how it will use BodyLabs’ technology, it’s been speculated that it will be integrated with the company’s smart mirror Echo Look (see Echo Look: AI-Assisted Camera Delivers Smart Styling Advice). Customers could test garments on a digital model of their own body without leaving home – potentially reducing returns.
  • Bespoke Body Analysis: California-based Fit3D builds 3D body scanners that collect insights on posture, weight distribution and body fat percentage in 40 seconds. Current uses include in-depth fitness tracking for boutique US gym Equinox, body visualisation for Dutch lingerie retailer Hunkemöller, and custom fittings for San Francisco-based bespoke jeans start-up Unspun
  • On-the-Go Eyewear: US eyewear brand Warby Parker has incorporated smart glasses sizing into its app. Using Apple’s TrueDepth camera – the technology that enables facial recognition on the iPhone X – the app maps the customer’s face. An algorithm then suggests frames optimised for their individual facial proportions. Customers can use ApplePay to purchase frames in-app. For more on tech-assisted eyewear sizing, see Digitally Customising the Eyewear Retail Experience in Virtual-Fit Tech Update: Accessories 2016.
