Maison & Objet Preview: Rui Pereira

Magic Boxes by Rui Pereida for Blackcork

Portuguese-born Rui Pereira first caught our eye at Milan Design Week 2013, where the designer showcased a range of bathroom accessories made from cork. We look forward to seeing his latest work this weekend at Paris trade show Maison & Objet, which also makes use of this eco-friendly material.

Created for the debut collection of Blackcork – a new furniture brand from Portuguese cork company Sofalca – Pereira’s floating shelves give the impression of weight, despite their light material. The pebble-like shapes are actually hollow, meaning they can be used for discreet storage.

As designers and brands look for more sustainable materials, cork is emerging as a popular alternative due to its natural and tactile qualities. We also noted this at Ambiente 2013. For more on the rethinking of natural materials, see Biomaterials and Precious Craft from A/W 15-16’s Materials Focus.

Look out for our live coverage from Maison & Objet (January 24-28) on our Instagram account @WeAreStylus. Check back for our full report of the event on Stylus.com, coming soon.
