Ambiente 2014: Kimu Design

Taiwan-based Kimu Design is part of a wave of emerging Asian brands that blend Western and Eastern styles – a trend highlighted in our report Chinese Design: A Fresh Blend. Spotted at Ambiente earlier this month, its aptly titled range The New Old Light updates the traditional Chinese paper lampshade through the addition of a metal shade.

Combining these opposing shapes also brings a strong practical element, as the paper lantern can be pushed up into the shade to create a stronger spotlight, or pulled down for a softer effect. When pushed back, a discreetly hidden magnet keeps the lantern in place for a neat finish. For more magnetic products, see Magnetic Potential.

Increasingly, lighting designs are including adjustable options for creating softer effects in more contemplative spaces. For more on this, see Life-Enhancing Lighting. For more highlights from the event, see our full Ambiente 2014 coverage.
