Lie Sangbong Store Launch, NY: Art + Heritage

Luxury womenswear designer Lie Sangbong has opened his first store-cum-art gallery outside his native Korea in New York's Meatpacking district, with a space that trades on both the heritage of the brand and its connections to the art world.

Located on Gansevoort Street, the 2,000 sq ft store is divided into three areas. In the entrance space, the designer's heritage comes into focus via a display of archival pieces from the past decade (modernised by being positioned directly adjacent to the current seasonal catwalk collection). The middle section is given over to slightly less expensive 'younger' pieces, as well as accessories and lifestyle-driven products such as candles and product design collaborations. And the significant rear features an art gallery that reprises his initial 2009 showroom-cum-art-gallery, dubbed Blank Space in Chelsea.

Sangbong's association with the art world, particularly emerging talent, is an extensive part of the brand's DNA. His standalone gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn showcases rising stars, while a collaboration with Korean artist Jang Seung-Hyo for his latest catwalk show created a runway comprised of nearly 2,000 12x12" patterned glass tiles – some which now serve as a 'rug' in the main room of the store.

The overall design aesthetic is also consciously gallery-like; stark off-white and grey walls create a blank canvas for key pieces, while an undulating celling softens the space.
