Samsung: Future Living

Extra

We can expect three-day working weeks and underwater cities within the next century, according to a new report from Samsung, led by a team of futurists and academics in the UK.

Many of the report's predictions were influenced by future environmental concerns, resource scarcity and the changing nature of work – topics Stylus has explored in depth in recent reporting and Innovation Forums. Highlights include:

  • Super Skyscrapers: As city space becomes more squeezed, we will burrow deeper and build higher. Skyscrapers built with new materials such as carbon nanotubes and diamond nanothreads will dwarf today's skyscrapers. Smart walls made of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that adapt to your mood will improve life up to 25 storeys underground.
  • Magic Materials: Nanotechnology will revolutionise the way we clean and maintain our homes and buildings, with self-cleaning and self-repairing materials.
  • Working Smarter: Communication advances such as realistic holograms will remove the need for in-person meetings, saving time and reducing emissions from travel. Businesses will take advantage of advances such as digital currency and artificial intelligence (AI) to drive efficiency and reduce the working week.
  • Printed Gourmet: We will be downloading dishes from famous chefs to our 3D printers, making complex meals in minutes. 3D-printing drones will also allow us to manufacture everything from origami-like furniture to entire dwellings ourselves.
  • Moving Out: Clothing will provide immersive, haptic feedback, while streams of digital information will multiply. In addition, solar cell advances will enable sub-aquatic communities to create their own oxygen, while commercial spaceflight will take similar technology beyond our planet.
