Time-Released Vitamins: Personalised Supplements

Multiply Labs' supplements can be customised to release vitamins at different times throughout the day

Using technology developed at the University of Milan and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, San Francisco-based start-up Multiply Labs has created a ‘time-released’ 3D-printed vitamin supplement.

Available for pre-order now with the first round of shipments scheduled for May 2017, the supplements can be customised to release vitamins at different times throughout the day. For example, consumers could take a single pill in the morning with vitamin C and vitamin D3 released immediately, and caffeine released later on for a midday energy boost.

“Most pills give you a wide combination of vitamins and supplements, but you might not need all of them. With our platform, you can create your own pill with only what you need,” Joe Wilson, Multiply Labs co-founder, told Massachusetts-based seed accelerator Y-Combinator.

The vitamin supplements are shipped on a monthly subscription basis, with the option for customers to change the quantity and ratio of pills every two weeks. “The demand for personalised supplement pills is something that’s been around for quite a while. I think what Multiply Labs is doing is particularly interesting because they are using new technology to serve an old demand,” Qasar Younis, Multiply Labs partner and chief operating officer, told Y-Combinator.
