François Xavier Saint Georges: Roto

French-Canadian designer François Xavier Saint Georges’ Roto drawing machine makes circular artworks using a rotating unit that scores a canvas using a block of graphite.

Roto has two different speeds that layer marks, building up the artwork’s intensity at random. As the graphite block wears away, the machine’s drawing style changes, resulting in different tonal intensities.
