Loop’s Zero-Waste Packaging Platform for Brands

As consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of single-use plastics, grocery brands are overhauling their packaging strategies. To this end, a coalition of global brands has come together to create Loop, a new zero-waste online shopping platform.

The platform will allow customers to order branded grocery, personal care and cleaning products which arrive in robust, multi-use packaging made from aluminium and glass. Packaging is then collected on request in a reusable tote bag by Loop to be sterilised and used again by the next customer.

The platform will stock frozen foods such as ice cream alongside chilled and ambient food and drink products.

Brands involved in the project include Unilever, P&G, Nestle and PepsiCo, which have collaborated with US packaging producer TerraCycle to create the closed-loop shopping platform.

Laurent Freixe, Nestlé chief executive for the Americas, said: "Loop provides a much-needed innovation platform, challenging companies to take a fresh look at our value chains and integrate reusable product packaging as part of our efforts to waste-reduction to reduce waste. It's a critical part of our commitment to work with consumers to protect our planet for future generations."

Announced at this year's Davos Summit, pilots for the scheme will launch in Paris and New York in spring, and in the UK with a partnership with British supermarket chain Tesco in September 2019.
